THE GRAND HOTEL AT VAG

Regardless of your destination, your hotel will always become an integral part of your trip. It’s more than just a place to steal bars of miniature soap, it’s where you unload your experiences, where your next move materializes, and where chance encounters turn into lasting memories. Beyond the veneer of the freshly made beds and restocked mini fridges lies a catalogue of stories that won’t show up in your average vacation album, and over the next 4 months “The Grand Hotel”checks in at the VAG to tell these tales, exploring the synthesis between design, travel, people and culture that these institutions create.

Whether it’s the flickering neon of roadside motels or the glamorous residents of Hollywood’s infamous Chateau Marmont, every facet of these buildings’ transient existence is carefully considered and contextualized, taking you behind the “do not disturb” signs to understand the movements that shaped, and were shaped by the hotel. Here’s your chance to fraternize with the razor wit of the Algonguin round table club, step into the dizzying world of Brion Gysin’s and William S Burroughs Dream Machine at The Beat in Paris, or simply marvel at the overwrought details of Copenhagen’s SAS hotel, where architect Arne Jacobsen meticulously designed everything from the facade to the stainless steel cutlery used in the restaurant.
To complete your stay at the VAG, contemporary chain The Ace Hotel has set up a gift shop combining the pragmatic needs of modern travellers with a romantic nod to the classic age of hospitality. While you may have trouble finding the pool, you won’t have any trouble extending your stay and being immersed in the history of the worlds iconic and indispensable crash pad’s, reminding us that these are more than just places to sleep.

If your a visitor to Vancouver, there’s no better place to compliment your stay, and this exhibition, than the Burrard Hotel. The 50s motor inn has been redesigned to current standards while maintaining its retro flourishes, and with sleek deco rooms oozing cool around an urban oasis courtyard, you’ll feel like your in town for Sinatra’s bachelor party, not just your cousins wedding. Accommodating staff and swank amenities like free bike rentals, solidify the Burrard as the perfect harmony of past and present. Check in here

Vancouver, April, 2013

In the States we tend to think of Vancouver as something like BC’s answer to San Francisco, or the Hollywood to Toronto’s New York. The reality, of course, is a little more complicated than any of these shorthand renderings. It’s a unique mix: Northwest beauty, West Coast mellowness, a dash of film-industry glamour, and a certain individualistic spirit that’s common to places settled by adventurers. The best way to get a handle on Vancouver’s character is to visit; and while every visit is unique, we’ve put together a little tasting menu, offering three ways to do it.

THE BURRARD
Arrive in your own car; this is a classic mid-century motor lodge, and it still looks the part. These days you’ll park underground, as the central courtyard is now a raised garden terrace, ringed by colorful rows of guest room doors. What’s behind those doors? Simple, stylish rooms — basic by boutique standards, but far better than you’d expect at the Burrard’s price point. In-room amenities include 42-inch HDTVs and automatic espresso makers, which, along with the hotel’s own ground-floor café, ought to be enough to get you started before you rent a bike and hit the streets. Try the exquisite espresso at Revolver in Gastown and consider pausing street-side for aJapadog — more or less exactly what it sounds like — before beginning your caffeine-fueled ride along the Stanley Parkseawall.

The Burrard adds Andy Warhol to its art collection

The Burrard hotel in downtown Vancouver has added a very special new treasure to its art collection with a limited edition diptych of Andy Warhol’s iconic “Marilyn Monroe” (the likes of which has been seen exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum) displayed on Alien Workshop skateboards inside the hotel lobby.

With its signature garden courtyard and retro West Coast style, the Burrard first opened in 1956 when the “Burrard Motor Inn” joined the neon-clad glitz that characterized much of downtown Vancouver until the mid 1970s. At its peak, there was one neon sign for every 18 residents in the city, making Vancouver the neon sign capital of Canada. Dating back to the early 1960s, the Burrard’s classic neon sign is among the last ones left standing today.

This exhibition of limited edition boards is on display in the lobby at The Burrard and has been brought to you as a collaboration between: The Burrard x Color Magazine x Supra Distribution x Alien Workshop x the Andy Warhol Foundation.

Go check it out for yourself and tag it in a photo!

Saturday, April 13th, Vancouver’s alt-electro dance rock duo Dear Rouge bring you the latest Green Couch Session for the track ‘It’s Different’ off the Kids Wanna Know EP. Having won last year’s PEAK performance project, it seemed fitting for the location of this session to be filmed at the parkade below 102.7 The Peak. Though it was a very cold night, it did not affect the two in any way from performing at their best. Currently the husband and wife duo are working on their full-length album.

[About Dear Rouge]

Dear Rouge is a Pop/Rock duo out of Vancouver, Canada. The members consist of Danielle McTaggart and Drew McTaggart. In the summer of 2009, Danielle & Drew were touring separately across Canada, pursuing music projects. Finding they had a true connection, they began to talk of collaborating. This led them into a Vancouver studio in 2010, where they created the single “Heads Up! Watch Out!” After receiving positive feedback from music industry leaders and local fans, they toured together through Europe the following summer. While touring they decided to officially join together in creating a truly unique and creative sound “Dear Rouge”. They have completed their first EP, and are currently working on their first full length album.

[About Green Couch Sessions]

The idea behind Green Couch Sessions came after discovering the green couch in an alley near Davie St in Vancouver. Since then it has become the icon of supporting and sharing music which fills the space and scenery to create a sound unique to the session. Never to be reproduced, only to be enjoyed by you, the viewers.
